Celebrating 10 years

In 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico. As the creators of the Puerto Rico-inspired Tropicraft mod, we wanted to give back however we could. Our work on Tropicraft had shown us that we can accomplish more when we work together, So, we set out to create a charity livestream event to raise US$3,000 in aid for the island. We had no idea what we were doing, but we knew why we were doing it. We gathered our friends and every connection we had and set out on our mission. We ended up raising over US$10,000 that weekend, which blew us away! From that moment, we saw that Love Tropics was more than a one-time event, but a vessel for collective change using the game we love the most, Minecraft, as its foundation.

Love Tropics is the product of the gargantuan collaborative efforts of dozens of volunteers who pour in thousands of hours every year. More importantly, Love Tropics is not just an event; we are a community. Together we learn, grow, celebrate, and unite to make a tangible difference in the world. And perhaps most beautifully, with each event, our digital community becomes forever intrinsically linked to a physical community somewhere on Earth, from the Osa Rainforest to the Mpanga River. To date, we have raised over US$321,000 over 9 events — that is INCREDIBLE. We have had fun while changing lives. We have learned and grown while inflecting positive change. These 9 events have been an honor, so let us tell you more about our 10th.

For this event, we are partnering with Seacology, an organization that shares our love of the tropics and the amazing people that live there.

In their words:

Seacology’s mission is to protect threatened island ecosystems all over the world. We do that by working directly with communities, helping them to preserve their cultures and improve their lives while saving precious island habitats.

Seacology has launched over 450 projects on islands in 74 countries all around the world. At the end of 2025, these projects have protected 672,518 acres of terrestrial island habitat, and 923,293 acres of marine island habitat.

Island focus

Seacology focuses exclusively on islands for a few incredibly important reasons:

Species found on islands are especially vulnerable to extinction. Almost 40% of critically endangered animals live on islands, and 80% of all recorded extinctions have happened to island species. Additionally, because of their nature, species found on islands are incredibly unique. For example, despite only making up 5% of Earth's land, an estimated 20% of all bird, reptile, and plant species call islands their home.

Island communities are often under-resourced, and they face an overwhelming pressure to boost economic development, often at the cost of environmental damage. Compounding this issue is that islands are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and their ecosystems are often the first to experience the devastating effects.

The project

Funds raised from this year's Love Tropics will support Barangay Dulao in protecting their ancestral lands. We have the opportunity to fully fund this project with US$35,000 in donations!

These funds will allow them to establish a rotating forest patrol (Bantay Gubat) with designated community wardens. These patrols will collect seedlings to repopulate deforested areas with, maintain firebreaks, and enforce slash-and-burn bans.

Additionally, the community will be able to install a solar panel system for important public buildings, including their school and the clinic.

Previous conservation efforts in the forests surrounding Barangay Dulao have yielded positive results. Forests cover about 90% of the area around Barangay Dulao, and are home to several critically endangered species, including the Philippine Eagle, the Luzon Cloudrunner, and a species of the parasitic plant Rafflesia. To help protect the land & these species, the community banned tree-cutting and hunting on about 25 acres of forest back in 1995. Now, they are hoping to greatly expand this protected area.

The event

Love Tropics is a 48 hour charity livestream that takes place on a modded Minecraft Java server. The server is open to anybody who donates $10 or more to join. On the server you'll be able to collect cosmetics, play minigames with other donors and the various content creators who host the event, mini-golf (with crabs!), take part in a scavenger hunt, perform in a theater play, and so much more!
